Whilst you’re surely on Discord and it is the platform to be on, Discord isn’t perfect.

One of the areas where it tends to suffer is audio, especially when you want to record Discord audio.

There are lots of reasons you might want to record your Discord audio.

The problem is Discord does not natively support voice recording, there is no Discord call recorder.

    Why not?

Because voice recording can be super sketchy.

    Both morally and legally.

Before we explain how to record audio on Discord you should know 2 things.

    1. In many states/ countries, recording a conversation without receiving the other person’s permission is super illegal.
    2. Morally, recording people without their permission is just a super sucky thing to do.

Now that’s out of the way we’ll be explaining the best/ easiest ways to record audio on Discord.

How To Capture Discord Audio On OBS

    obs studio

OBS is one of the most popular methods of recording Discord audio, especially with YouTubers/ streamers.

OBS (Open Broadcast Software) works by recording the multiple audio channels you have open. This covers things like your mic input, desktop audio, and audio coming in from any open programs (like Discord).

OBS can record separate audio tracks which is perfect for creators.

OBS is relatively easy to use. However, since it is mainly aimed at content creators, the UI can be pretty intimidating.

There are ALOT of audio options.

Luckily for you, we have an easy-to-follow how-to record Discord audio with an OBS guide.

    1. Download OBS here.
    2. Install it like you would any other program.
    3. The first time you open up the program you’ll be prompted to run through a configuration wizard.
    Auto-Configuration Wizard
    1. If you don’t plan on streaming your recording you can just cancel out of the setup wizard. However, if you will be streaming we recommend following the wizard.
    2. Under sources click the + sign to add an audio channel. Select “Audio Output Capture”.
    Audio Output Capture
    1. A window should pop up called create/select source. Name the source whatever you like
    Create new source
    1. You’ll now be prompted to select the output device you wish to record. If you only have one output device choose Default.
    select the output device
    1. Now we suggest carrying out a quick test before you try to record Discord Audio. Play some audio and check the audio mixer window in the center bottom of OBS.
    check the audio mixer window
    1. If the bar lights up, then OBS is detecting your audio, and everything is ok. If not, go back to step 7 and choose a new device.
    2. Now we need to make sure OBS is recording your mic. By default, your microphone should be automatically detected and appear in the audio mixer as Mic/Aux.
    Mic/Aux in audio mixer

If it doesn’t appear go back to the sources window, click +, and select “Audio Input capture”. Select your microphone.

    1. You’re ready to start recording! If for whatever reason you don’t want to record your mic, press the speaker symbol next to it in the audio mixer.
    2. You can also play around with the volume levels to make sure one input doesn’t overpower the other.
    volume levels in audio mixer
    1. On the bottom right is the controls window for OBS. Click start recording.
    start recording button

Click it once to start a recording and again to stop.

    1. When you stop recording the file will be automatically saved. To view your recording select a file and then show recordings.

OBS automatically records the file as an MKV file format. This is a video format.

OBS always uses a video format even if you don’t record any video.

If you only want to record audio you’ll have to convert the MKV video file to an MP3. This will get rid of the unwanted/ blank video feed.

    Record Discord Calls

If you’re asking how to record Discord calls your best options are OBS and the Craig Bot.

Whilst OBS is a nice tool, it’s not aimed specifically at Discord.

Even worse, as stated above it only records video files.

Constantly converting your recording to MP3s can be a pain.

So, we suggest trying out the Craig Bot for Discord.

If you’re not a content creator or just looking to record a quick Discord call it’s a lot quicker / simpler to use than OBS.

How To Record Discord Audio With Craig

Before we begin Craig comes with a caveat.

You need to be the owner of the Discord you want to record.

    1. Visit the Craig website and invite him to your server.

    1. You’ll now get the Discord authorization page. Assign Craig to your chosen server.

    1. Craig will now be a member of your server and you’re good to go.
Craig is now a member of your server
    1. Craig is controlled through commands just like other Discord Bots.
    2. To start recording, join a channel and enter  :Craig:,  join   in the chat box.
    3. Craig will join your audio channel and automatically start recording. There will be a spoken warning that he is recording, and Craig’s name will change.
    Craig’s name will change
    1. To stop Craig, you have two options. Type :Craig:,  leave This will kick Craig from your current channel and stop the recording. However, he’ll keep recording in other channels.
    2. Type :Craig:,  stop and he will stop all recordings.
    3. Finally, to check your recordings, check your private messages. Whenever you start a recording Craig will PM you with links where you can download the recordings.

Craig has a few more commands that can be found here.

How Do I Record Discord with Audacity?

So far we’ve presumed that you were trying to record your conversations with others.

As we said at the beginning this can be legally and morally tricky.

So, what if you’re just looking to record your voice on Discord?

    For example, for a Podcast?

If you’re only looking to record yourself you should take a look at Audacity.

It’s another great free audio tool you can use to record yourself.

    1. Download Audacity here.
    Download Audacity
    1. Startup Audacity and go straight to edit and then preferences.

    1. Under devices choose your chosen playback and recording devices. You can see for this test I chose to use my built-in microphone.
    2. Now you’re ready to record. Join a Discord channel. When you’re ready to record click the big red button in Audacity.

    1. To stop recording press the black square button.
    2. To save your recording – Go to File, then export and choose the file format you want to save the file in and save it.

How Do I Add Discord Audio To My Twitch Stream?

Sometimes you want to record your Discord audio so that you can add your Discord voice chat to your streams.

For example,  if you’re part of a clan or team.

Unfortunately, there’s no native way to direct your Discord audio directly to Twitch.

    You’re going to need

    • Twitch
    • Discord
    • OBS (again)
    • Discord Streamkit Overlay for OBS

There are other options, but we’ve found OBS to be the quickest to set up and easiest to use. Just follow the steps below.

    1. Go to  Discord Settings and choose “Connections”.
    Connections in Discord Settings
    1. Select the Twitch icon and a new browser tab will open. Follow the login prompts.

    4. The kit will ask for permission to access your account. Accept.

    1. Paste the voice widget URL from earlier into the OBS URL text box as shown below

    1. Click OK and you’re all set to start streaming!

Troubleshooting – Discord No Sound / Discord Audio Not Working

If at any point you find you’re having problems with your Discord audio not working when recording then it’s probably one of two things.

    • Make sure you’ve selected Input/Output audio devices in OBS/ Audacity and Discord are all the same. For example, make sure you have the same microphone selected in each program’s options.
    • If this doesn’t work then it’s likely your computer isn’t picking up your microphone/ headset/ speakers. In this case, first, try unplugging them/ plugging them back in. If that doesn’t do it, ensure sure you have the most recent driver updates installed.

A Discord mixer Bot can also help you organize your separate audio streams to make sure you only record the audio channels you want. It can also be used to prevent echo on Discord.

How to Record Audio on Discord Mobile?

OBS and Audacity are great, but what if you want to record audio from Discord mobile?

You can’t without taking extra steps.

This is because as stated earlier in many countries recording people with them knowing is often highly illegal and morally frowned upon.

However, you do have two options open to you for how to record Discord calls on mobile devices.

Craig on Discord mobile iPhone & Android

Craig on Discord mobile iPhone & Android

Earlier we told you about Craig, a Discord Bot that can be used to record Discord voice chat.

He works just as well on Discord mobile as on desktop.

Plus, all the commands are the same.

The primary benefit of using Craig is he notifies everyone on your channel that you’ve started recording, so no pesky legal worries.

It also only requires using one app.

    iPhone

If you have an iPhone you can follow the steps below to record Discord

    1. Open up Discord and launch the channel you want to record
    launch the discord channel
    1. Exit out to the iPhone menu and open the Voice Memos app
    2. Tap the big red record button
    3. Go back to Discord and let the audio play.
    4. When finished, return to voice memos, and save the recording.

Make sure you use your phone’s speakers when trying this, otherwise it won’t work.

It’ll also pick up ambient/ background noise from the room you’re in, not great for content creators.

    Android

On Android, the method is pretty much the same. The only catch is most Android phones don’t come with a built-in voice memos App, so you’ll have to find one yourself on the Google play store.

Also, be warned that some phone manufacturers/ app developers disable the ability to record audio when you’re using another app for privacy reasons.

    Bottomline

There are a few ways you can record your Discord audio and even connect it directly to your Twitch stream.

If you’re just getting into content creation then Craig is the quickest and easiest to set up.

However, he is also a little limited when it comes to options.

OBS is a little bit fiddlier and Discord specific. However, once you get used to it has a lot more functionality than Craig.

You can even use it to stream straight to Twitch!

Audacity is a nice choice if you’re only interested in recording yourself for things like game podcasts.

We would suggest you don’t even bother trying to record Discord from mobile, but if you do Craig is once again the best option.

If you’re a GeForce user you can check out our FAQ to find out how to use GeForce Experience to record Discord. It’s a bit of a buggy mess though so we suggest checking out our other options first.

However, you choose to record Discord, make sure that other members know what you’re doing to avoid accidentally doing anything illegal.

    FYI

How to record Discord audio with GeForce Experience?

This isn’t the ideal way to record Discord, but it is possible.

You need to make sure that your game, Discord, and GeForce Experience all have the same audio input/ output options elected.

    1. In Discord select settings and then Voice & Audio. Change Input and Output from the default option to your chosen devices.

    2. Do the same in the GeForce Experience Audio settings menu. Make sure they match with Discord.

    3. In your game’s audio settings go to voice chat input and make sure it also matches what you selected for steps 1 and 2.
