Amber Heard‘s character, Mera, made a brief appearance in the trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which was exclusively shown at CinemaCon 2023.
The convention, aimed at members of the movie-theater industry, provided a sneak peek into Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming projects, including the highly anticipated DC Studios films.
Aquaman Sequel Trailer Reveals Returning Cast and Teases Mera’s Role
The trailer unveiled at CinemaCon featured the return of Jason Momoa as Aquaman, along with Patrick Wilson and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II reprising their roles.
Fans were also delighted to see Heard’s comeback as Mera. However, the trailer has not been released to the public yet, leaving audiences eager for its official unveiling.
Earlier reports had claimed that Heard, 37, had been cut from Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but her representative vehemently denied these rumors.
In June, the actress’s spokesperson dismissed the speculation, labeling it as “inaccurate, insensitive, and slightly insane.”
These rumors arose amid Heard’s highly publicized legal battle with her ex-husband Johnny Depp.
The Virginia defamation case, which favored Depp, concluded with a settlement between the two parties and the withdrawal of their appeals.
Amber Heard’s Testimony and Insights into Mera’s Reduced Role
During the trial, Heard testified about her fight to remain part of Aquaman’s sequel, even when the studio showed reluctance.
She revealed that her role as Mera had been significantly reduced, with action scenes and important character interactions being cut from the script.
Heard’s talent agent, Jessica Kovacevic, also provided testimony, stating that her client received a diminished role in the film due to perceived “lack of chemistry” with co-star Jason Momoa.
Kovacevic attributed the studio’s decision to distance itself from Heard to the negative press and online attacks she faced amid the Depp controversies.
Walter Hamada, the former president of DC Films at Warner Bros., clarified that comments from Depp and his attorneys did not influence Heard’s involvement in the sequel.
However, he acknowledged that discussions had taken place within the studio regarding the chemistry between Heard and Momoa.
Hamada confirmed that Mera’s role in the sequel was always planned as an integral part of the story. He described Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom as a “buddy-comedy” sequel with Momoa and Wilson as co-leads.
According to Hamada, the production proceeded smoothly, despite the behind-the-scenes discussions.
Fans can mark their calendars for the highly anticipated release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on December 20th, where they will finally get to see the culmination of Mera’s storyline in the thrilling underwater world of Atlantis.
